Did you know it's World Oceans Day?
This day has made us reflect on the choices we make and how they impact our beautiful oceans. Here at PEP Kitchen, we love to eat, like really love to eat. But as humans, our food choices and practices have a massive impact on the world around us. For example, the fishing industry has had a detrimental effect on sea life. What if we told you that you can actually help the marine ecosystems by... eating. Yes, you read that right.
Replacing your fish with alternatives is an amazing way to decrease your ocean impact. But it can be quite hard to find good vegan alternatives that match the delicious flaky texture that fish has. Well, we're pleased to say there is at least one fantastic replacement. Today, the spotlight is on Banana Blossom; an amazing edible flower replacing fish on dishes everywhere.
The Banana Blossom, also known as the banana heart, is the tear shaped flower that grows attached to a banana cluster. It has a tough purple skin encasing the fleshy edible bit that lies inside. It's this fleshy bit that can be used to mimic the texture of fish, and it can be eaten raw or cooked. It's already used commonly in South-East Asia, and in the last few years it has taken the UK vegan community by storm.
With a mild fruity taste, the Banana Blossom is great at taking on flavours, which is what makes it so perfect as a fish dupe! Able to withstand loads of seasoning, it harnesses any flavour you give it to create a convincing taste and mouth-feel.
All of this, plus it's super nutritious. Packed with phosphorous, potassium, copper, magnesium, iron and calcium, it provides a plethora of vitamins. It's said to support menstrual wellness by promoting progesterone hormones, help to control diabetes, boost mood and prevent cancer and heart disease! That's a lot of bang for your banana buck.
Banana Blossom is now available tinned at many supermarkets, so it's readily available and pretty accessible for those of you reading who are intrigued. Are you already a Banana Blossom fanatic? We'd love to hear your favourite recipes!
