Tempeh is an incredible plant based food made by fermenting soybeans to create something marvellously meaty. Tempeh is traditionally an Indonesian food, and is considered an ordinary, everyday ingredient. The UK was a bit late to the party, and it was first seen in supermarkets here in 2019. We, however, are way ahead of the hype. At PEP Kitchen, we get our tempeh from an awesome local business called Club Cultured, who make their delicious organic tempeh in Hackney Wick, London. We’ll let you know how you can get your hands on our tasty tempeh dish at the bottom of the page- so keep reading so we can tickle your taste buds- you won’t be able to resist the ‘tempeh-tation’!
The flavour of tempeh is nutty and earthy, but it really soaks up loads of flavour from whatever you use to marinate or cook with it. This makes it perfect for so many meals, from chilli or stir fries to bulking out a super sandwich. It’s amazing crumbled up as a substitute for any minced meat, grilled on the BBQ to create amazing tempeh steaks, and it can even make for a stellar smoky bacon substitute! Basically, however you want your tempeh, it’s going to be divine.
Not only does tempeh taste amazing, it also has loads of health benefits. It’s packed with protein, so if you’re looking for vegan protein sources, look no further. But the protein content in tempeh has a bonus; the fermentation process breaks down acids in the soybeans, which makes for really easy to digest protein. Tempeh is also a good source of calcium, manganese, iron and phosphorus, and it’s not just low cholesterol, it’s no cholesterol!
